Hutong series #3
Small hutong section off Xueyuan Nan Lu, Haidian district, Beijing, China, 2006
This former dwelling, which was about 30 feet down the road from the child in the previous photo’s still occupied house, shows evidence of it’s past teenage inhabitants. The pose and positioning of the poster gives silent testament to the mix of hopelessness and resignation seen in much of the youth in these urban areas. The changing face of this country poses challenges to the generations who have lived knowing a different China. How are the attitudes and beliefs of the generations being born into such a rootless and ever-shifting landscape being formed?
